Project Description

VALidation of IASI level 2 products.

Funded by: EUMETSAT
Participant institutions: Universidad de Valladolid (UVa), Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET).
Principal investigator:  A. M. de Frutos (UVa),  O. García (AEMET)

The EUMETSAT Fellowship “VALIASI” aims to perform the first comprehensive and scientific long-term validation of the operational atmospheric trace gas products from the remote sensor IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interforemeter). IASI, on board meteorological polar satellites MetOp, is a key instrument for EUMETSAT’s contribution to GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) initiative and to climate monitoring in general. Its mission is guaranteed until 2022 through different sensors: IASI-A on MetOp-A launched in 2006, IASI-B on MetOp-B launched in 2012 and IASI-C on MetOp-C expected to be launched in 2016. The IASI validation will be performed by using the ground-based FTS (Fourier Transform Spectrometer) experiment as core reference technique, since it is the only measurement technique that can comprehensively validate many different atmospheric trace gas products.
